We love images that stimulate conversion and this sixth-plate occupational daguerreotype of a gentleman is a perfect example. He is posed in a serious, business-like manner with his hand firmly atop a lock box. As you will notice under magnification the lock is fully engaged! Is he a banker, a store owner, maybe an accountant, or is he in gold country where his mine has just made a wealthy strike? We’ll probably never know for sure, but it does set our minds racing. The image is in very good/excellent condition. Expert flesh tones have been added to his face and hands, and done in a manner that is much more proficient than that used by most American daguerreotypists and more consistent with methods of the European and English masters. There is a band of perimeter tarnish and a few small spots. At an angle in strong light there are a few visible buffing lines. The image was unsealed when purchased and has now been resealed with a new glass. It is housed in a full leather case. This is a great addition to any collection!
