Marais, the great French Actor

Wonderful advertisement from the Paris Theatre with a woodburytype of the great actor, Marais, in the center. It is published by Lemercier from a negative by Alphonse Libert. Marais is seen posing as as the character he portrays in Danicheff. He is surrounded with great illustrations that identify the theater as the famous Odeon with Comedy and Drama on each side. From September 6-12, 1877, this publication is comprised of a full-page review, in French, of Marais’ talent, with biographical information on the back.

Overall it is in excellent condition, with a few light creases in the paper mount that do not affect the woodburytype. This would look wonderful mounted and framed. The image measures 3 1/2” x 5”; with the paper mount it measures 15 3/8” x 14 5/8.”
