What a doll!
| Adorable sixth-plate daguerreotype of a young girl posed with her porcelain doll. This cutie, with her hair done in ringlets, stares with amazement at the photographer. To our delight we can assume this was done by an itinerant or rural daguerreotypist. His last minute choice of using a supply box on top of a chair to achieve the appropriate height for his camera is quite interesting. Writing is visible on the crate and torn shipping paper is seen at the bottom. The table next to the girl now appears very low and the two books on it are barely noticeable. An unidentifiable object, quite possibly the bottom of the daguerreotypist’s reflector screen, is on lower left side of the table. Nothing seems in sync, but somehow the daguerreotypist has captured a certain charm that brings a smile to our face. The image is in very good condition with some extremely light tinting to the girl’s face and lips. It has a hint of tarnish and there is a light line on the left middle perimeter and a few very small mat marks. The darker line on the top right appears to be part of the backdrop and is not damage. The plate has been resealed with a new glass. Sold |
