Tender Couple

Tender half-plate daguerreotype of a couple by H.S. Brown, Milwaukee (identified by a brass mat stamp). According to Craig’s Registry Brown worked in Milwaukee from 1848-60. One obituary called him one of the pioneering photographers of Milwaukee. Wonderfully posed by Brown, this couple appears to be very much in love. The woman gently leans toward her husband for support. Sitting upright, he extends his arm around her. Both are dressed in very stylish attire. Her dress is gorgeous in its design and is accentuated with a lace collar and sleeves. Large earrings and a broach round out her ensemble. He wears a long formal coat, silk vest and an interesting polka-dot and solid blended tie. There is tinting to the sitters’ faces and lips. The button design on his overcoat is quite unique. The plate is in excellent condition - the scan here simply does not do this image justice. There is one small white spider spot located on the man’s jacket that is visible in the scan. The daguerreotype had old seals tightly intact and has now been resealed with a new glass. It is housed in a full leather case which includes a beautiful green velvet pad on the inside.
