Mother and child

Endearing sixth-plate daguerreotype of a young mother and child, (please see the preceding lot for a portrait of this woman with her husband). Mom leans in face to face in a loving manner. She tries her best to keep the child still by holding her hand and gently extending her arm around her waist. Yet, the young girl still manages to squirm ever so slightly creating a soft focus. It is easy to discern the familial features though between mother and child and the father from the previous portrait. This was most likely family day at the daguerreian studio as the mother is wearing the same dress from the half-plate. While not identified we can also assume this was done by H.S. Brown of Milwaukee. The image is in excellent condition with light tinting to the sitters’ faces and lips. There is a band of perimeter tarnish and a few tarnish spots. The plate had old seals intact and has now been resealed in a full leather case.
